A tree from the garden before

The walnut was already here when the Seed to Sea transformation began in 2020. Rather than beginning with a blank site, the new garden grew around this mature tree and the history it carries.

We now look to it for summer shade, autumn nuts and the seasonal moment when its leaves fall and winter light returns. Birds use its canopy too, and plants beneath it have to respond to the particular conditions created by a large, established tree.
